Challenge | As a senior thesis project, I focused on minimizing food waste within individual consumers by targeting multiple leverage points in the current kitchen waste process, specifically the lack of information.
Solution | A store-to-home information system.
In-store, perishable items have a small, round sticker that provides the user with knowledge of how and where to store the item, along with an approximation of how long it will be freshest for once it is ripe. The intention of the stickers is to keep the information easily accessible and clearly visible to the consumer once the item reaches their kitchen.
Each store would ideally be equipped with a kiosk that provides pamphlets to explain the sticker system, along with the corresponding app.
The Fresh Complex app personalizes the user’s shopping and eating experience by providing a portion and meal plan guide based on age, weight, activity level, and food preferences. Based on this information, the meal planning feature selects weekly meal sets that utilize the same 3 to 4 fresh ingredients. The app also tracks what is in the user’s “kitchen” and notifies the user when items are close to going bad.
